Meet Maurice Wiegman
I come from a family of artists. My grandfather and great-grandfather were painters, my uncle was an artist and ceramicist, and another uncle was a draftsman. I learned to draw and paint from my grandfather at a young age. Later, I further developed these skills at graphic design school. I still enjoy drawing and designing, but my true passion lies in woodworking. That love of wood and working with my hands began when I started working for a small construction company. It became a true passion when I volunteered at 'De Delft' – a historical and cultural project that built a reconstruction of the 18th-century warship De Delft, a Dutch ship of the line from 1783. Within this project, I contributed to the reconstruction of the captain's quarters and designed the ship's stern. Woodworking allows me to fully express my creativity, patience, and craftsmanship.
Craftsmanship & Vision
For me, craftsmanship is a combination of attention, patience, and a love for the material. In every piece of wood, I see potential, which I bring to life step by step. From the choice of wood to the final finish: I pay attention to every detail, because it's precisely those details that make the difference. My vision is to create durable and timeless objects through craftsmanship and creativity. Pieces that are not only beautiful to look at, but also tell a story and can be enjoyed for years to come, or passed down.
Education & Experience
I have no formal training, but I do have over 20 years of experience in woodworking. I learned woodcarving during my time at De Delft in Rotterdam, where they recreated an 18th-century ship. There, I learned the intricacies of this unique craft—partly from head mentor Wouter Schalk. Everything else I do—from furniture making to restoration—I taught myself step by step. Out of curiosity, perseverance, and above all, a great deal of passion for the craft. This path has led me to develop my own unique style and approach, where creativity and craftsmanship converge.
